Guest Blog – Buying A Horse

A few months back I sold my fur child, my lovely chestnut pony, and some of you may be thinking, omg you did that in the middle of Covid… yes I did, and I actually had an amazing response to finding her a wonderful home. She’s now very happy with her new family enjoying the country side of NSW.

Now I did wait a few weeks before beginning my search again for my next 4 legged superstar, and here’s what I found:

1. We are in the middle of a pandemic, a small amount of people are selling.

2. Boarders are closed, so you can’t go to other states to view your next superstar, which makes it impossible to get anywhere.

3. Looking through horses sales ads and inquiring can be misleading. I have been through this and it sucks.

4. Be prepared for the horse not to have the education it says it has in the online ad.

All of these examples above unfortunately will most likely happen to you, and it’s happened to me. Lately it’s been disheartening as I have certain criteria I need in my next horse. Never the less a horse will come along that will fit myself and be my next superstar. So I say this to everyone that’s looking for their next superstar… Listen to what the seller’s telling you but do your own research, has the horse had many owners, why are they selling etc. Ask the hard questions! Go back for as many rides as you like to make sure the horse is what your looking for. Make sure to have whatever safety gear on to make you feel comfortable whilst riding. Shit can happen on an unknown horse! Have support people with you, or let people with know-how guide you whilst looking for your next horse. They will sometimes see what you don’t on the ground or riding. Don’t be disheartened or discouraged by how slowly this is taking, everything happens for a reason and you must embrace it.
