Much of the east coast of Australia has just experienced unpredented torrential rain for nearly 3 weeks, and the devastation caused to homes, businesses, properties and lives has been severe. Living Equine would like to express how deeply sorry we are to see this, and our thoughts are with everyone as they rebuild and recover.
A few key tips if you are caring for horses in the coming weeks
- If you are now able to safely access their paddock/stable, make sure they have clean fresh water, and that their living quarters is clean of any muddy or mouldy bedding.
- Keep a close eye for any signs of illness, and act accordingly.
- These warmer and dry days, are a great opportunity for a good antibacterial wash, to get rid of any nasties that may be living on the skin, or in manes or tails. Fly sprays and cotton or mesh rugs can be used to deter all the insects hanging around now from biting.
- Give your rainsheets a good wash and get them dry and ready for the next lot of rain.
- Do a stocktake on your feed, and make sure none of it is mouldy. Throw out what is spoiled, and stock up your supply.
These are just a few tips that will assist in making sure your horses are happy and healthy post the floods. Obviously if your horse was caught in flood water for extended periods of time, then they will need a vet to attend to them, and a much more thorough treatment plan.
