Equine Treat Breakdown – Repost ©

Giving our Equine Companions a treat from time to time is something that nearly any Equestrian would be familiar with. However have you ever considered what nutritional value Carrots, Apples or Licorice have for them?

Carrots

  • Made up of 85% water and 15% dry matter (mainly sugar)
  • Low in energy
  • Good Vitamin A supplement source

Apples

  • High in Potassium
  • Average – sized apple = 3 – 5 grams of fibre
  • High in Vitamin A & C (which are both antioxidants)

Licorice

  • Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant properties
  • Soothes and relieves irritation of mucous membranes
  • Promotes the secretion of phlegm and mucus from the respiratory tract
  • Aids gastrointestinal tract in lowering gastric secretions

All treats should be given in moderation; only 1 or 2 at a time. Carrots and Apples can be cut up to prevent choking.
