Equestrian Profile – Wayne Boyde ©

The next addition to Living Equine’s Equestrian Profiles, is one of my TAFE teachers, and absolute gem, Wayne Boyde.

EQUESTRIAN QUICK TEN
1) What made you fall in love with horses?
I loved the thrill of riding and got my first pony at the age of 10. The pony was called little Joe, part Welsh (although the welsh part of him was hard to find), he was a little rogue.

2) How long have you been riding for?
On and off for around 50 years.

3) Have you done any Tertiary Education in horses?
My main interest focused on the breeding side of horses. I would always attend seminars, listen to people and here their views. I feel that 2 of the greatest attributes a competent and understanding horse person should have is “to use commonsense and develop good observational skills”. Also always be opened minded and don’t go through life thinking this is the way I was taught and it’s the only way this can be done.

4) Have you broken any horses in yourself?
Yes would take my time and do lots of driving and long reigning.

5) What are your greatest Equine Achievements?
My greatest equine achievements, well I would have to say just being lucky enough to have had a lovely line of horses and selected horses over the years that have performed well. The horse makes the person, and the person often receives the glory, that’s why we need to make sure our horses are happy and comfortable during the time they are with us.

6) What has been your deepest Equine low?
Loosing my old stallion Nature Boy who was born at Hobartville Stud in 1973, myself and my brother raced him, my brother also trained him he won 5 races 3 at Randwick and 2 at Rosehill. He was a beautiful type and had a sensational temperament. He is buried on my property with another 8 of my old riding horses and broodmares. Nature Boy’s sire Romanda who won the Breeders Plate and Hobartville Stakes, and raced in the Melbourne Cup. He is buried on our old property Blue Gardens along with some of our other wonderful horses.

7) What jobs have you been able to work with horses so far?
Re-education of horses, great success with problem broodmares relating to reproduction, yearling preparation, racehorse trainer, worked on a few thoroughbred studs, showing, running my own stud, selling yearlings, was head teacher of Horse Industry Studies, now head teacher of Animal Science at Richmond and would love to cut down on my work.

8) What are your current Equine ambitions?
Well, I get pleasure at looking at horses in the paddock. My brother has just put in a dressage arena so would like to do some jumping, just for fun and enjoyment.

9) What is your favourite movie?
When I was young I saw a movie called Ryan’s Daughter, I’m sure no one would remember the movie, but it was very touching.

10) Favourite accessory?
Well that would have to be my 2 dogs!

Living Equine thanks Wayne very much for taking the time to be profiled, and wish him all the best with his future equine endeavours!
